How To Talk About Luck in Egyptian Arabic

Today we’re covering luck in Egyptian Arabic.

Last month was Saint Patrick’s Day. This got us thinking about all the ways luck plays a part in life.

Luck in Egyptian Arabic: Vocabulary

As usual, we’ll cover the most important vocab if you want to talk about luck in Egyptian Arabic.

After that we’ll show you example phrases of the words in action.

Luck. : 7az.

.حظ

Lucky. : ma7zoz.

.محظوظ

As we’ve said before, adjectives that describe yourself (lucky) will almost always end in a tamrubootuh (ة).

If you are a girl saying you are “lucky”, then, it would be pronounced ma7zoza.

Good luck! : 7az sa3eed / 7az 7elw.

.حظ سعيد/ حظ حلو

This is a nice thing to say before somebody somebody does something difficult.

Bad luck. : 7az we7sh/na7s. 5

.حظ وحش/نحس

Unlucky. : man7oos.

Luck in Egyptian Arabic: Example Sentences

Time to move on to some example sentences!

We’ve split our example sentences for luck in Egyptian Arabic into two parts: good luck and bad luck.

Good Luck

Luck is very important. : el7az mohem gedan.

.الحظ مهم جدا

I am a very lucky person. : ana shakhs ma7zoz gedan.

.انا شخص محظوظ جدا

Here are some other ways to describe yourself in Egyptian Arabic.

He found a 100 EGP on the ground, he is very lucky. : hwa la2a 100 geneh 3al ard, da ma7zoz awy. 10

.هو لقى 100 جنية على الارض …ده محظوظ قوي

Good luck! : 7az sa3eed!

!حظ سعيد

We had good luck during our trip. : kan 7azena 7elw f el re7la.

.كان حظنا حلو في الرحلة

Bad Luck

Time for the more negative example sentences.

You always have bad luck. : enta dayman man7os / enta dayman 7azak we7sh. 14

.انت دايما منحوس وحظك وحش

A black cat is a sign of bad luck. : el 2otta elsoda btgyb elna7s. 15

.القطة السودة بتجيب النحس

I don’t have any luck in my life. : ana ma3ndesh ay 7az f 7yaty.

.انا معنديش حظ في حياتي

Bad things keep happening to my friend. : sa7by dayman by7salo 7agat we7sha. 

.صاحبي دايما بيحصله حاجات وحشة

What was the most unlucky situation for you? : eh aktar mawkef kan 7azak feh we7sh. 18

ليه بتقولي كده؟ عندك مثال؟

Girl: Yes. Last week I went to a friend, I came out to find that my car was stolen, when I tried to take a taxi I found out that I forgot my phone and wallet in the car! : el esbo3 el fat kont 3and wa7da sa7bty, lama nzlt la2et el3arbia etsar2et, w lama get akhod taxi, la2et eni nasia el mobile w elma7faza f el3arbia!

.اه ..مثلا الاسبوع اللي فات كنت عند واحدة صاحبتي..نزلت لقيت عربيتي اتسرقت ولما جيت اخد تاكسي لقيت اني ناسية الموبايل والمحفظة في العربية

I don’t think getting your car stolen is all that common in Egypt.
