Today we are back with Egyptian Arabic Conversation 16.

Egyptian Arabic Conversation 16: Translation

One note before we get started – this is a conversation between a man and a woman.

Pay attention to the verb conjugations.

Happy Valentines Day my love. : kol sana w enta tayb ya 7abiby.

.كل سنة وانت طيب يا حبيبي

You too my love, did you sleep well? : w enty tayba ya 7abibty, nemty kwaiss?

وانتي طيبة يا حبيبتي، نمتي كويس؟

Yes very, and you? : Ah awy, w enta?

اه قوي، وانت؟

Half half, I wanted to sleep more, but I have work. : nos nos, kan nefsi anam aktar bas 3andi shogl.

God be with you, if you weren’t at work, where would you wish to be? : rbna ma3ak, law makontsh f elshogl, kan nefsak tkon fen?

ربنا معاك، لو مكنتش في الشغل، كان نفسك تكون فين؟

Anywhere you are at, send location. : ay makan el enti feh, eb3ati location.

Hahaha, liar, but seriously, I also wanted you with me. : hahah ay kalam, bas bgad ana kanan kan nefsi tb2a ma3ia.

Egyptian Arabic Conversation 16: Important Vocabulary

Happy Valentines Day. : kol sana w enta tayb.

.كل سنة وانت طيب

This technically can be used for just about any holiday.

Kol sena w enta tayb / enti tayba is super common.

 

My love. : 7abiby.

.حبيبي

Another super common Egyptian Arabic word.

Use this word basically like “sweetheart.”

 

Did you (fem.) sleep well? : Nemty kwaiss?

نمتي كويس؟

A good question to know how to say.

 

Half half. : nos nos.

.نص نص

This literally means “half half”, but it’s a common way to say “not so great.”

 

God be with you. : rbna ma3ak.

ربنا معاك

A common way to express sympathy for someone.

 

Send location. : eb3ati location.

. ابعتي لوكيشن

This is basically the guy flirting.

Also a common thing to hear when ordering an Uber and talking to the driver. 🙂

 

Hahaha, liar. hahah ay kalam.

.هاهاها اي كلام

Ay kalam means “nonsense” or “bullshit”.

It’s also a way to say “you are lying” in a joking way.

Context + Further Explanation

Egyptians love Valentine’s Day, even though it’s not an official holiday.

And, fun fact – there are two different days for Valentine’s Day in Egypt!

One last point – Egyptians have a great sense of humor, If you are on Facebook, expect to see some funny Valentine’s Day memes and jokes circulating online.
