Background

Do you believe (masc / fem):  … : Enta mesda2 / enti mesda2a…

انت مصدق / انتي مصدقة

The most common way to ask if somebody believes something.

It’s much better than… : Da ahla mn…. bkteer.

.ده احلى من … بكتير

This is a common way to make a comparison. In this phrase, it’s literally:

  • This: da
  • Better: ahla
  • Than: men
  • Much: Bkteer

Let’s take a selfie. : Yalla nakhod selfie.

.يلا ناخد سيلفي

A phrase you might need if you are visiting the pyramids. 😉

Take care… : 7aseb…

… حاسب

This is a command in Egyptian Arabic.

If they were saying it to a woman, it would be:

7asebi / حاسبي

You (masc) are a legend. : enta ostora.

.انت اسطورة

Ostara is basically an Egyptian nickname.

A bit informal (especially with this context), but a good word to know anyway.

You are welcome. : Ay khedma.

.اي خدمة

This is one of the many ways to say thank you in Egyptian Arabic.

Literally means “any service.”

It’s most common with service workers (cafe workers, taxi drivers, your doorman), so it’s good to understand what they are saying.

We are sure…. : Mot2akdeen…

…متأكدين

This is a good word to know.

To say “you are sure” about something:

  • Male: Mot2akd / متأكد
  • Female: Mot2akda / متأكدة
  • Group (the version that’s used in this comic): Mot2akdeen / متأكدين

Happy learning,

Cleo Lingo

  1. Excellent! A great way to learn real conversation, it would even be moreso if it had accompanying audio.M

  2. you might want to explain that it is “akhodlikom” I take for you (pl) because the syllable li indicates the preopsition for
and ahla min bkteer is maybe well translated as “better than by alot” because the b syllable in bketeer is like the b syllable in phrases that describe price. Other wise, people might wonder why it isn’t just akhodkom and kteer.
