About Eric Schenck (Co-Founder + Cleo Lingo’s Non-Native Student)

I’m Eric. I am originally from a small town in California with about 1,300 people, but I tell people I am from San Francisco because it makes me sound cool. After I graduated from Gonzaga University in 2015, I decided to travel to Cairo to learn Egyptian. This ended up happening, and now my Egyptian friends call me “howweguh.” Now, I live in Düsseldorf and try to understand German. Pray for me.

About Tarek Salah (Co-Founder + Cleo Lingo’s Native Expert)

I’m Tarek. I’m an Egyptian from Cairo, and I work as a chemical engineer (and some other things, too). I was born in America but I have never lived there. I met Eric in Cairo, and after he left Egypt, I decided to help him share his experiences with other foreigners who want to learn about the “true Egypt.” My friends call me “The Slayer,” but don’t worry: the most dangerous thing about me is that I don’t wear the seat belt in cars (come on, it’s Cairo). If you are trying to reach me, I’m probably playing Ultimate Frisbee.

If You Want To Hear About My Time In Cairo…

I (Eric) wrote a book called “The Land Of Nothing You’ve Ever Seen: 10 Stories From My Time In Cairo.” It’s all about the funny, weird, and sometimes dangerous things that happened to me while I was in Egypt.

People seem to like it. (If you read it, leave a review + email me a screenshot at eric@cleolingo.com, I will send you our exclusive resource: “150 Tips For Learning Egyptian Arabic”.)

How do I start learning Egyptian Arabic?

Our blog is a great place to start. We have over 270 blog posts from the last 7 years. If you are ready to take your Egyptian Arabic more seriously, you can check out the courses we have available as well.

No. I (Eric) am from close to San Francisco in the U.S.. Our resident Egyptian (Tarek) is from Cairo.

Yup! If you are serious about Egyptian Arabic and want to learn it as fast as possible, click here to go to our courses page

Scroll to the top right of our website and click the “Log In” button. You can also just click here.

This is called “Franco-Arabic” and it’s a common “letter + number combo” that a lot of Arabic speakers use when writing the language. A bit weird, but very cool. You can read more about what that is in this post.

Until 2024 we were using a specific software for all the audio on our blog posts. Unfortunately, this software only works with specific devices and browsers. Thankfully, we now use a tool that works for everyone. (And we are in the slow process of rolling it out to all blog posts.)
The best place is email (which I check every day). Just email me at eric@cleolingo.com and I will get back to you ASAP.
